However, a substantial gender pay gap exists in their own offices, a <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> analysis of Senate salary data reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Of the five senators who participated in Wednesday\u2019s press conference\u2014Barbara Mikulski (D., Md.), Patty Murray (D., Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.), Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) and Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.)\u2014three pay their female staff members significantly less than male staffers.<\/p>\n<h3>Murray, who has repeatedly accused Republicans of waging a \u201cwar a women,\u201d is one of the worst offenders. Female members of Murray\u2019s staff made about $21,000 less per year than male staffers in 2011, a difference of 35.2 percent.<\/h3>\n<p>That is well above the 23 percent gap that <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/SenateDems\/status\/204995230938836992\">Democrats claim<\/a> exists between male and female workers nationwide. The figure is based on a 2010 U.S. Census Bureau report, and is technically accurate. However, as CNN\u2019s Lisa Sylvester has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/tv\/cnn-fact-checks-rachel-maddow-alex-castellanos-feud-over-gender-pay-gap-determines-maddow-right\/\">reported<\/a>, when factors such as area of employment, hours of work, and time in the workplace are taken into account, the gap shrinks to about 5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>A significant \u201cgender gap\u201d exists in Feinstein\u2019s office, where women also made about $21,000 less than men in 2011, but the percentage difference\u201441 percent\u2014was even higher than Murray\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Boxer\u2019s female staffers made about $5,000 less, a difference of 7.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Free Beacon<\/em> used publicly available salary data from the transparency website Legistorm to calculate the figures, and considered only current full-time staff members who were employed for the entirety of fiscal year 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The employee gender pay gap among Senate Democrats was not limited to Murray, Boxer, and Feinstein. Of the 50 members of the Senate Democratic caucus examined in the analysis, 37 senators paid their female staffers less than male staffers.<\/p>\n<p>Senators elected in 2010\u2014Joe Manchin, Chris Coons, and Richard Blumenthal\u2014were not considered due to incomplete salary data.<\/p>\n<p>Women working for Senate Democrats in 2011 pulled in an average salary of $60,877. Men made about $6,500 more.<\/p>\n<p>While the gap is significant, it is slightly smaller than that of the White House, which pays men about $10,000, or 13 percent, more on average, according to a previous <em>Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/hostile-workplace\/\">analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pay differential is quite striking in some cases, especially among leading Democrats. Sen. Sanders, who is an avowed socialist who caucuses with the Democrats, has the worst gender gap by far. He employed more men (14) than women (10), and his chief of staff is male.\u00a0Like many of his fellow partisans, he has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/newsroom\/news\/?id=17e5beaf-4b3f-4db5-ad70-d7bead096937\">previously accused<\/a> Republicans of \u201ctrying to roll back the clock on women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>One possible explanation for the pay disparity is the noticeable preference among Senate Democrats\u2019 for male chiefs of staff, who typically draw the highest congressional salaries. Of the 46 Democratic Senators listing a chief of staff on their payroll in 2011, 13 were women.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14894\" style=\"width: 90px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/watchwomanonthewall\/files\/2012\/05\/Obama-I-support-sodomite-marraige1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14894 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2012\/05\/Obama-I-support-sodomite-marraige1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Obama&#039;s War on Women in the White House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>A similar disparity exists in the White House, which employs 74 men and only 48 women in senior positions.<\/h1>\n<p>Senate Democrats have been actively pushing the issue of equal pay over the past several days. \u201cIn 19 of the 20 most common occupations for men or women, women earn less for the same work. We need\u00a0#EqualPay,\u201d the official Twitter account of Senate Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/SenateDems\/status\/204995325268725761\">wrote<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Murray has invoked the so-called GOP \u201cwar on women\u201d in fundraising pitches for months. \u201cWomen are people. That should be obvious, but apparently it isn\u2019t, at least not to extreme Republicans who see us as mere targets of their political strategy,\u201d she wrote in May 10, 2012, campaign fundraising e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Democrats plan to bring the Paycheck Fairness Act, which some have described as a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/2012\/05\/paycheck-act-trial-lawyers-payday\/559256\">trial lawyers\u2019 payday<\/a>\u201d that would facilitate large punitive damage claims in discrimination suits, up for a vote following the Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n<p>Congress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/senate-dems-play-women-support-and-money_645807.html\">already passed equal pay legislation in January 2009<\/a>. President Obama has frequently touted that bill\u2014the Lilly Ledbetter Act\u2014as the first piece of legislation he signed upon taking office, and has sought to declare \u201cproblem solved\u201d on the issue of equal pay for women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe passed the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act<\/span>\u2014<\/strong>the first bill I signed\u2014so that equal pay for equal work is a reality all across this country,\u201d he said in June 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When it comes to prosecuting instances of gender pay discrimination, however, <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Obama administration<\/span> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2012-05-17\/to-lure-womens-votes-obama-turns-to-lilly-ledbetter\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">far less active<\/span><\/a><\/span> than that of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush. Under Obama, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed six gender-based wage discrimination lawsuits.
