Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney declared in a speech to the Latino Coalition, a conservative Hispanic organization, \u201cHere we are in the most prosperous nation, but millions of kids are getting a Third World education. And America\u2019s minority children suffer the most. This is the civil rights issue of our era. And it\u2019s the great challenge of our time.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Mitt Romney<\/a> said Wednesday he will expand Washington\u2019s endangered voucher program as part of a broad push for more school choice nationwide, setting up a dramatic contrast with President Obama, who has called for the D.C. program to be phased out, and with teachers unions, which have fought against expanded choice.<\/p>\n

Mr. Romney<\/a> announced the push on education in a speech in Washington as he made overtures to Hispanic voters, who regularly tell pollsters that access to education is one of their top concerns \u2014 even above immigration \u2014 and who generally support vouchers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere we are in the most prosperous nation, but millions of kids are getting a Third World education. And America\u2019s minority children suffer the most,\u201d Mr. Romney<\/a> said in a speech to the Latino Coalition, a conservative Hispanic organization<\/a>. \u201cThis is the civil rights issue of our era. And it\u2019s the great challenge of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he declared war on teachers unions, saying they \u201care the clearest example of a group that has lost its way.\u201d He said Mr. Obama is too beholden to the unions to be able to reform the school system.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Obama has been unable to stand up to union bosses \u2014 and unwilling to stand up for kids,\u201d Mr. Romney<\/a> said, accusing the president of putting the unions\u2019 campaign donations ahead of the needs of students those teachers are teaching.<\/p>\n
