May 19, 2012<\/p>\n

Blind dissident Chen Guangcheng and his immediate family have left China on a flight to the United States. They are expected to arrive in Newark, N.J., Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Their departure caps off three weeks of roller coaster diplomacy that reached the very highest levels of Chinese government and the White House.<\/p>\n

The human rights activist is best known for his fight against forced abortions and sterilisations under the One Child Policy.<\/p>\n

He served a four year prison sentence for what are widely believed to have been trumped up charges before being placed under a brutal, extra-judicial house arrest in his hometown province of Shandong.<\/p>\n

Several media outlets, as well as human rights supporters in the U.S., cited late May as a potential departure date if all rules for passport applications were strictly adhered to.<\/p>\n

But on Saturday, social media reports surfaced that said Chen had left the hospital. By midday, Chen spoke to the AFP and the Associated Press to say he was at the airport with his family and while he had no details, he believed they would be leaving that day.<\/p>\n

State Dept Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed that Chen and his family left China so he can pursue studies at an American university.<\/p>\n

“We are looking forward to his arrival in the United States later today. We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen’s desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals,” Nuland said.<\/p>\n

His departure is in some ways bittersweet. His supporters by and large agree the only way he will be truly safe is outside China.<\/p>\n

But for Chen, and dissidents before him, leaving is a compromise; he may be safer but he is also farther away from his cause.<\/p>\n

Chen Guangcheng has been mistreated and now that he's coming to the USA, maybe we will learn much more about his being tortured for Christ's Pro-Life Agenda, unless he fears the Red Chinese will harm the rest of his family left behind in China.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Daring Escape Attempt <\/strong> On April 22, Chen made a daring and highly risky escape with the assistance of his wife.<\/p>\n

After several days in hiding, after a car chase and near arrest by Beijing authorities, he sought refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing on Friday, April 27.<\/p>\n

FROM: ONE MILLION MOMS AND DADS…<\/strong>Chen Guangcheng is the leading activist in China against the forced abortions, coercive sterilizations and infanticides that result from the one child policy there. Chen recently escaped house arrest and is now in an American Embassy in Beijing.<\/p>\n

According to OneNewsNow<\/a>, Chen and his family had been harassed and kept under house arrest since the summer of 2005, except for a four-year period when Chen was jailed for exposing the horrendous forced abortion policies of China.<\/p>\n

After Chen’s release in September 2010, the family was again placed under house arrest, their movements severely restricted, with even 6-year-old daughter Kesi subjected to searches when she came home from school. Chen and his wife were beaten several times.<\/p>\n

Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican and head of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and has chaired hearings on Chen’s bogus imprisonment and the extensive forced abortion and sterilization campaign he exposed. He has written a letter<\/a> to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on his website, calling for diplomatic involvement in Chen’s safety.<\/p>\n

TAKE ACTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

We need your help to urge President Obama<\/strong><\/a> to do everything in his power to provide asylum for Chen or other diplomatic immunity that will ensure he is safe from harm. Should he be illegally detained by Chinese officials, he could again be falsely imprisoned or put to death for exposing the brutal forced abortion campaigns taking place in China.<\/p>\n
