When he finally figured it out, he told Hannity to \u201crun your show better,\u201d then covered his head in shame and refused to speak, other than to say \u201cI\u2019m going to be fired.\u201d<\/p>\n Hannity explained the situation\u2013 the two were in a heated debate while he and Tea Party activist Neal Boortz<\/strong> played catch with the famed Hannity show football. Beckel didn\u2019t look over at the producer giving a five-second warning and inadvertently went off on-screen. When he finally realized what happened, Beckel was beyond contrite, instead saying he was going to get fired and refusing to speak for the rest of the segment. Both Stefano and Boortz tried to comfort him\u2013 Stefano trying to continue the policy debate but noting that she took exception with the \u201cpersonal\u201d nature of debate sometimes, Boortz adding, \u201cif they try to fire you, we\u2019ll defend you.\u201d<\/p>\n The perils of live TV: you can say something so inappropriate and refuse to believe you did for so long, that the unbelievable moment in which you realize what happened makes everyone come out looking more endearing.<\/p>\n Update<\/strong>: Mediaite spoke to Stefano, who confirmed to us that this was her first time on the panel with Beckel and that even before the program \u201cI said, \u2018he\u2019s so charming, how can I yell at him?\u2019 I find Bob to be charming, and who among us hasn\u2019t done the same?\u201d \u201cBob and I wanted to make sure Sean looked good,\u201d she tells us jokingly, \u201csince he had promised fireworks on the panel at the beginning of the show,\u201d adding that \u201cI am confident that, if Bob had realized we were live, he wouldn\u2019t have said that\u2026 It is far from the end of the world. Kennedy<\/a>‘s presidential campaign<\/a> in 1968. Early in his career, he joined the U.S. Department of State<\/a> and became the youngest Deputy Assistant Secretary of State<\/a> for the Carter administration<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup> Beckel was the campaign manager for Walter Mondale<\/a>‘s 1984 presidential campaign<\/a>. During that campaign he became known as the man who wrapped the Wendy’s slogan “Where’s the Beef?<\/a>” around Mondale’s opponent for the Democratic nomination Gary Hart<\/a> effectively. That campaign as managed by Beckel resulted in Mondale’s defeat which was the worst for any candidate in U.S. history in the Electoral College.<\/p>\n Beckel managed Alan Blinken<\/a>‘s 2002 Senate campaign until he was dismissed after being targeted for extortion by a prostitute.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n He was co-host of Crossfire Sunday<\/a><\/em> on CNN<\/a> alongside Tony Snow<\/a> and later Lynne Cheney<\/a>, and went on to Fox News Channel as a political analyst and commentator, regularly appearing on such shows as Hannity & Colmes<\/a><\/em> (later Hannity<\/a><\/em>), America’s Newsroom<\/a><\/em> and Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld<\/a><\/em>. Beckel is a co-host of Fox News’ The Five<\/a><\/em>, a political talk show that replaced Glenn Beck<\/a><\/em> in the 5 p.m. Eastern time slot in July 2011.<\/p>\n He made a brief appearance as himself on the Season 8 premier of 24 in a mock debate with fellow Fox News Analyst Monica Crowley.<\/p>\n Beckel is a graduate school professor of politics at the George Washington University<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n Beckel, a recovering alcoholic,[5]<\/a><\/sup> has spoken openly about his past addictions to drugs and alcohol, admitting in July 2011 on The Five<\/em>: “I’m a recovering addict and cocaine was my drug of choice.”<\/p>\n In 2007, Beckel was involved in an altercation in a Bethesda, Maryland grocery store parking lot with a man who took issue with his anti\u2013George W. Bush bumper stickers.[6]<\/a><\/sup> In October 2011, Beckel says he nearly choked to death at a Fox News reception, but was saved by Fox News chief Roger Ailes<\/a> and The Five<\/em> co-host Eric Bolling<\/a>.[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n Beckel initially evoked controversy in August 2011 when he implied on air that he had held back from criticizing his Fox News colleague Sarah Palin<\/a>. He agreed with The Five<\/em> co-host Greg Gutfeld<\/a> when Gutfeld said he felt awkward making negative comments about Palin, because “it’s like (badmouthing) a coworker.” “I know exactly what you mean,” Beckel added. “I’ll be honest, I’ve pulled my punches.”[8]<\/a><\/sup> Both Gutfeld and Beckel later said they were joking, however.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n In December 2010, with reference to Julian Assange<\/a>, Beckel commented, “This guy’s a traitor, he’s treasonous, and he has broken every law of the United States. And I’m not for the death penalty, so […] there’s only one way to do it: illegally shoot the son of a bitch.”[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n On April 16, 2012, Beckel said to Jennifer Stefano<\/a> after she claimed that a program to help poor children did not work, “You don\u2019t know what the f*ck you\u2019re talking about!” Beckel did not realize the show was back from the commercial break, and initially refused to apologize.
