Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), said in a statement. \u201cUnder this rule, within a year, religiously affiliated medical providers would have to fire and refuse to treat persons of other faiths in order to uphold their own deeply held beliefs \u2014 or be forced \u2026to close their doors rather than violate tents of their religion. This is forced discrimination. This is wrong. No American should be forced to choose between their faith and their job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fortenberry is the sponsor of a bill \u2014 HR 1179 \u2014 that would ensure religious health care providers, such as Catholic hospitals, are able to practice both their professions and their faith simultaneously. Since Friday, several pro-life groups have been calling on constituents to support the bill, which was introduced last year and has 97 cosponsors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12026\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/watchwomanonthewall\/files\/2012\/01\/Obama-and-Kathleen-Sebelius-kissing1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12026\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2012\/01\/Obama-and-Kathleen-Sebelius-kissing1-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Obama and Kathleen Sebelius kissing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Friday that all \u201cFDA-approved\u201d contraceptive measures should be available to every woman nationwide, free of charge \u2014 so everyone will have a share of bearing the cost of subsidizing them, regardless of moral or religious beliefs. The only exception is for religious organizations that employ and treat only members of their own faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen will not have to forego these services because of expensive co-pays or deductibles, or because an insurance plan doesn\u2019t include contraceptive devices,\u201d she wrote in a statement. \u201cThis decision was made after very careful consideration, including the important concerns some have raised about religious liberty. I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faith groups, however, don\u2019t see it that way at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFreedom of conscience is a sacred gift from God, not a grant from the state,\u201d said Galen Carey, vice president for government relations at the National Association of Evangelicals. \u201c\u201dNo government has the right to compel its citizens to violate their conscience.
