\nBack in the 50’s there was a well known radio<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nHost\/comedian\/song writer in Hollywood named<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nCarl Stuart Hamblen<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0who was noted for his drinking,<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nwomanizing, partying, etc.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>One of his bigger hits at the time was<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\n“I won’t go hunting with you Jake,<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>
\nBut I’ll go chasing women.”<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>One day, along came a young preacher holding<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nA tent revival. Hamblen had him on his radio show<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nPresumably to poke fun at him.<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nIn order to gather more material for his show,<\/span><\/em><\/em>
\nHamblen showed up at one of the revival meetings.<\/span><\/em><\/em>Early in the service the preacher announced, “There is one man<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
In this audience who is a big fake.” There were probably others<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
Who thought the same thing, but Hamblen was convinced that he<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Was the one the preacher was talking about (some would call that\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n
Conviction) but he was having none of that.<\/em><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Still the words continued to haunt him until a couple of nights<\/em><\/em>
\nLater he showed up drunk at the preacher’s hotel door around<\/em><\/em>
\n2AM demanding that the preacher pray for him! But the<\/em><\/em>
\nPreacher refused, saying, “This is between you and God and<\/em><\/em>
\nAnd I’m not going to get in the middle of it.” But he did invite<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Stuart in and they talked until about 5 AM at which point<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Stuart dropped to his knees and with tears, cried out to God.<\/em><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>But that is not the end of the story. Stuart quit drinking,<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Quit chasing women, quit everything that was ‘fun.’<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Soon he began to lose favor with the Hollywood crowd.<\/em><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\nHe was ultimately fired by the radio station when<\/em><\/em>
\nHe refused to accept a beer company as a sponsor.<\/em><\/em>
\nHard times were upon him. He tried writing a couple<\/em><\/em>
\nOf “Christian” songs but the only one that had<\/em><\/em>
\nMuch success was “This Old House”,<\/em><\/em>
\nWritten for his friend Rosemary Clooney.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em>As he continued to struggle, a long time friend named<\/em><\/em>
\nJohn took him aside and told him, “All your troubles<\/em><\/em>
\nStarted when you ‘got religion,’ was it worth it all?”<\/em><\/em>
\nStuart answered simply, “Yes.”<\/em><\/em>Then his friend asked, “You liked your booze so much,<\/em><\/em>
\nDon’t you ever miss it?” His answer was, “No.”John<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Then said, “I don’t understand how you could give it<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
Up so easily…”<\/em><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>And Stuart’s response was, “It’s no big secret.<\/em><\/em>
\nAll things are possible with God.” To this John said,<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n
“That’s a catchy phrase. You should write a song about it.”<\/em><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\nAnd as they say, “The rest is history.”<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em>The song Carl Stuart Hamblen wrote was<\/em><\/em>\u00a0“It Is No Secret.”<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>

\nWhat He’s done for others, He’ll do for you.<\/em><\/em>
\nWith arms wide open, He’ll welcome you.<\/em><\/em><\/div>\n

Carl Stuart Hamblen’s father Dr. James Henry Hamblen {pictured above (left) converses with Dr. Ezekiel Vargas of Mexico (right)}<\/strong>\u00a0(1877-1971) was a lifelong Texan, a pastor of the\u00a0Methodist Episcopal Church, South<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Texas<\/a>, an evangelist and revivalist preacher, and subsequent to 1946, was the founder of the\u00a0Evangelical Methodist Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After a long career as an\u00a0itinerant<\/a>\u00a0Methodist<\/a>\u00a0circuit<\/a>\u00a0preacher and pastor, Dr. James Hamblen \u00a0served as first general superintendent of the fundamentalist and missions-centered\u00a0Evangelical Methodist Church<\/a>\u00a0during the denomination’s founding, and was pastor of First Evangelical Methodist Church,\u00a0Abilene, Texas<\/a>, for several decades.<\/p>\n

His son,\u00a0Carl Stuart Hamblen<\/a>, was a composer and singer, penning and performing popular songs “This Ole House” and “It Is No Secret (What God Can Do);” and in 1952 he ran for\u00a0president of the United States<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Prohibition Party<\/a>\u00a0ticket.<\/p>\n
