He was one of the world&#8217;s best-known celebrities in the 1920s and 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>Known as\u00a0<a title=\"Oklahoma\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\">Oklahoma<\/a>&#8216;s favorite son,<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Will_Rogers#cite_note-curtis-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Rogers was born to a prominent\u00a0<a title=\"Cherokee Nation (19th century)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee_Nation_(19th_century)\">Cherokee Nation<\/a>\u00a0family in\u00a0<a title=\"Indian Territory\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Territory\">Indian Territory<\/a>\u00a0(now part of\u00a0<a title=\"Oklahoma\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\">Oklahoma<\/a>). By the mid-1930s, Rogers was adored by the American people. He was the leading political wit of the\u00a0<a title=\"Progressive Era\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Progressive_Era\">Progressive Era<\/a>, and was the top-paid\u00a0<a title=\"Classical Hollywood cinema\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Classical_Hollywood_cinema\">Hollywood movie star<\/a>\u00a0at the time. Rogers died in 1935 with aviator\u00a0<a title=\"Wiley Post\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wiley_Post\">Wiley Post<\/a>, when their small airplane crashed in Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>His vaudeville rope act led to success in the Ziegfeld Follies, which in turn led to the first of his many movie contracts. His 1920s syndicated newspaper column and his radio appearances increased his visibility and popularity. Rogers crusaded for aviation expansion, and provided Americans with first-hand accounts of his world travels. His earthy anecdotes and folksy style allowed him to poke fun at gangsters, prohibition, politicians, government programs, and a host of other controversial topics in a way that was readily appreciated by a national audience, with no one offended. His aphorisms, couched in humorous terms, were widely quoted: &#8220;I am not a member of an organized political party.
