As you know,\u00a0American Values,<\/em>\u00a0my non-profit public policy organization, cannot endorse candidates for public office. However, I also run a political action committee, Campaign for Working Families (CWF). I am sending you this special message from CWF so I can inform you about a major announcement I made this weekend. — Gary<\/em><\/p>\n

After careful consideration and prayer, I decided to publicly endorse Senator Rick Santorum yesterday in Greenville, South Carolina.<\/p>\n

My intention had been to avoid an endorsement this cycle. But in recent days it has become obvious that conservative voters are deeply divided about who should carry the banner for our values into the 2012 election. I have been receiving an increasing number of questions from our grassroots supporters around the country seeking guidance on which candidate they should support. I feel it is imperative that I take the lead now.<\/p>\n

As you know, I believe virtually all of these candidates are men who would be fantastic presidents. My endorsement of Rick Santorum is in no way meant to be critical of the others. But I believe Santorum can best articulate the Reagan conservatism that has defined my political life and holds the best hope for the future our children and grandchildren will inherit. Rick Santorum is unambiguously pro-life and pro-family.<\/p>\n

The election of our next president in 2012 will be the most important election of my generation. Campaign for Working Families will continue to build a war chest to ensure our values prevail in November. I believe the candidate best able to do that is Rick Santorum. But let me assure you that we will deploy our resources for whoever is selected as the nominee.<\/p>\n

Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bauer received a bachelor’s degree from\u00a0Georgetown College<\/a>\u00a0in Georgetown, Kentucky and a law degree from\u00a0Georgetown University<\/a>. He served as\u00a0Ronald Reagan<\/a>‘s\u00a0Undersecretary of Education<\/a>\u00a0from 1982 to 1987, and as an advisor on domestic policy from 1987 to 1988.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0While serving under Reagan, he was named Chairman of President Reagan’s Special Working Group on the Family. His report, “The Family: Preserving America’s Future,” was presented to the President in December 1986.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Bauer served as the president of the\u00a0Family Research Council<\/a>\u00a0from 1988-1999.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He resigned from this position to run for the\u00a0Republican Party<\/a>\u00a0nomination for\u00a0President of the United States<\/a>. He dropped out of the race after the primaries in February 2000. In 1996, he founded the\u00a0Campaign for Working Families<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(CWF), a\u00a0Political Action Committee<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to electing “pro-family, pro-life and pro-free enterprise<\/a>” candidates to federal and state offices.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In addition to serving as the chairman of CWF, Bauer is also the president of\u00a0American Values<\/a><\/em>, a non-profit organization “committed to defending life, traditional marriage, and equipping our children with” conservative values.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He also serves on the Executive Board of\u00a0Christians United for Israel<\/a>, a lobby group headed by\u00a0John Hagee<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Gary Bauer was one of the signers of the Statement of Principles of\u00a0Project for the New American Century<\/a>\u00a0(PNAC) on June 3, 1997. He also serves on the board of the recently formed, right-wing\u00a0Emergency Committee for Israel<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Political positions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bauer describes himself as\u00a0pro-life<\/a>. He is in support of repealing laws that allow abortion. He advocates for the\u00a0Supreme Court’s<\/a>\u00a0overturn of\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/a><\/em>\u00a0as the first step in the pro-life cause.[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He wants to cut funding for\u00a0Planned Parenthood<\/a>\u00a0and do away with any U.S. aid for organizations that provide or advise abortions. Bauer also says that he would counsel raped family members against abortion.[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He points to the\u00a0Constitution<\/a>\u00a0and the Christian view of human life as reasons for not supporting euthanasia, stating that, “all people have immeasurable value because they have been created in the image and likeness of God.” He is a supporter of the death penalty for\u00a0death row<\/a>\u00a0inmates.[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Bauer opposes\u00a0cloning<\/a>\u00a0and embryonic\u00a0stem cell<\/a>\u00a0research, but supports adult stem cell research. He supports a\u00a0Constitutional<\/a>\u00a0amendment<\/a>\u00a0to ban\u00a0same-sex marriage<\/a>, and prefers\u00a0abstinence<\/a>\u00a0programs to comprehensive\u00a0sex education<\/a>\u00a0programs. Bauer wants to remove from the tax code all economic disincentives to marry.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

On foreign policy issues, Bauer supports strong ties with\u00a0Israel<\/a>, would not trade with\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0until the country improves its\u00a0human rights<\/a>\u00a0record, and supports full funding for the\u00a0Iraq War<\/a>.
