If<del><\/del>eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?\u201d<\/strong> Another said,<strong> \u201cIf Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in\u00a0<del><\/del>one week?\u201d A third question dealt with how many pounds of cotton Frederick had picked.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt kind of blew me away,\u201d Braxton said. \u201cDo you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He\u2019s not answering this question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSomething like shouldn\u2019t be imbedded into a kid of the third, fourth, fifth, any grade,\u201d parent Terrance Barnett told WSB. \u201cI\u2019m having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>School district spokeswoman Sloan Roach told the station teachers were trying to do a cross-curricular activity, combining math problems with social studies lessons. While the district encourages such pairings, the problem with the math homework was that it gave no historical context to its questions.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2012\/01\/Beating-Slaves-Math-Question2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11217\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2012\/01\/Beating-Slaves-Math-Question2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WAGA-TV<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that there are concerns about these questions and we agree that these questions were not appropriate,\u201d Roach said. Still, she said she didn\u2019t think the teachers were being purposely insensitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is simply a case of creating a bad question,\u201d she told local Fox affiliate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfoxatlanta.com\/dpp\/news\/local_news\/School-Assignment-Offends-Parents-in-Gwinnett-County-20120106-pm-pk\" target=\"_blank\">WAGA-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The parents were told the school had collected the assignments and shredded them so that they wouldn\u2019t resurface.<\/p>\n<p>Roach said there is a process to review questions before they are given to students, but didn\u2019t happen in this case.
