I look forward \u00a0to reading this great devotion every year, remembering from year to year that it is there for me on the first day in the month of December, just when the days are growing darker and colder that could depress even the brightest mood. \u00a0\u00a0Dr. Charles H. Spurgeon puts it all into perspective for me every December 1st. \u00a0I always look forward to this devotion by Dr. Spurgeon on December 1, beginning not only the\u00a0Liturgical\u00a0Year of Advent (in many years) but in my own personal Season of Advent. \u00a0This\u00a0inspiring\u00a0devotion Dr. Spurgeon left us is part of his collection in a book entitled “Morning & Evening Daily Devotionals”<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0He was born June 19, 1834, and he went home to be with the LORD on January 31 ,\u00a01892. \u00a0Regardless of which\u00a0denomination\u00a0you attend and what theology you ascribe, you will find that Dr. Spurgeon’s great sermons and devotionals are an inspiration and timely instruction on how to live a devoted, victorious Scriptural Life in\u00a0Christ. \u00a0\u25ac \u00a0Donna Calvin

(Wikipedia)<\/em> Dr. Spurgeon was a British\u00a0Particular Baptist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0preacher<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who remains highly influential among\u00a0Christians<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of different\u00a0denominations<\/span><\/a>, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers”<\/strong>. He was a strong figure in the\u00a0Reformed Baptist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the\u00a01689 London Baptist Confession of Faith<\/span><\/a>\u00a0understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people,[1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0often up to 10 times each week at different places. His\u00a0sermons<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have been\u00a0translated<\/span><\/a>\u00a0into many\u00a0languages<\/span><\/a>. Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the\u00a0New Park Street Chapel<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(later the\u00a0Metropolitan Tabernacle<\/span><\/a>) in\u00a0London<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for 38 years.[2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0He was part of several controversies with the\u00a0Baptist Union of Great Britain<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and later had to leave the denomination.[3]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1857, he started a\u00a0charity organization<\/span><\/a>\u00a0called\u00a0Spurgeon’s<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which now works globally. He also founded\u00a0Spurgeon’s College<\/span><\/a>, which was named after him posthumously.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more.[4]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held throngs of listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians have discovered Spurgeon’s messages to be among the best in Christian literature. My soul begin this wintry month with thy God. The cold snows and the piercing winds all remind thee that he keeps his covenant with day and night, and tend to assure thee that he will also keep that glorious covenant which he has made with thee in the person of Christ Jesus. He who is true to his Word in the revolutions of the seasons of this poor sin-polluted world, will not prove unfaithful in his dealings with his own well-beloved Son.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winter in the soul is by no means a comfortable season, and if it be upon thee just now it will be very painful to thee: but there is this comfort, namely, that the Lord makes it. He sends the sharp blasts of adversity to nip the buds of expectation: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes over the once verdant meadows of our joy: he casteth forth his ice like morsels freezing the streams of our delight. He does it all, he is the great Winter King, and rules in the realms of frost, and therefore thou canst not murmur. Losses, crosses, heaviness, sickness, poverty, and a thousand other ills, are of the Lord\u2019s sending, and come to us with wise design. Frosts kill noxious insects, and put a bound to raging diseases; they break up the clods, and sweeten the soul. O that such good results would always follow our winters of affliction!<\/span><\/p>\n

How we prize the fire just now! how pleasant is its cheerful glow! Let us in the same manner prize our Lord, who is the constant source of warmth and comfort in every time of trouble. Let us draw nigh to him, and in him find joy and peace in believing.
