This is “1984” using 2011 technology! \u00a0Do you think that government is just going to sit on this Twitter information or will they use it for their own gains, from spying to selling information to big businesses on what ads to plague you with. \u00a0Here comes the source for developing an “Enemy’s List”!!! \u00a0What better way to determine who is a pro-life Christian and possible trouble maker and who is not? What better way to determine who is a Bible-believing Christian who believes that so do my is a sin, now the new hate crime of the evil liberals in charge — the DC\u00a0Oligarchy! \u00a0Expect nothing good to come from this invasion of your privacy! So much for 4th Amendment Rights – they are being thrown out the window! \u00a0What U.S.\u00a0Constitution? \u00a0What happened to the right to privacy and illegal search and seizure! \u00a0The Bill or Rights just became a joke. \u00a0This is an outrage! \u00a0Send a tweet the government doesn’t like and expect a visit from the secret service or some other jack-booted secret-police, a SWAT team from the Homeland Security, “a bunch of civil servants” (or thugs), complete with automatic machine guns and black hoods in the middle of the night smashing in your front door with a 2-foot in diameter ramming pole with your tweets in hand showing you to be an enemy of the state. \u00a0Sounds like a real fun party, doesn’t it? \u00a0Better put your lawyer on speed dial, but that may not even help you. Remember, since The Defense Authorization Bill’s recent passage they can take anyone (even U.S. Citizens on U.S. soil) anywhere from anyplace and detain them, imprison them, torture them and it’s all legal for the government to do to you — and you get no opportunity for due process. \u00a0Is this the definition of a police state? \u00a0If it is not, then what is? \u00a0\u25ac Donna Calvin<\/strong><\/p>\n

Library of Congress to receive entire Twitter archive<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"The Library of Congress and Twitter have signed an agreement that will see an archive of every public Tweet ever sent handed over to the library’s repository of historical documents.<\/p>\n

“We have an agreement with Twitter where they have a bunch of servers with their historic archive of tweets, everything that was sent out and declared to be public,” said Bill Lefurgy, the digital initiatives program manager at the library’s national digital information infrastructure and preservation program. “The archives don’t contain tweets that users have protected, but everything else \u2014 billions and billions of tweets \u2014 are there.”<\/p>\n

Lefurgy joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris Tuesday morning to talk about the library’s digital mission.<\/p>\n

Using new technical processes it has developed, Twitter is moving a large quantity of electronic data from one electronic source to another. “They’ve had to do some pretty nifty experimentation and invention to develop the tools and a process to be able to move all of that data over to us,” Lefurgy said.<\/p>\n

The Library of Congress has long been the repository of important, historical documents and the Twitter library, as a whole, is something historic in itself.<\/p>\n

“We were excited to be involved with acquiring the Twitter archives because it’s a unique record of our time,” Lefurgy said. “It’s also a unique way of communication. It’s not so much that people are going to be interested in what you or I had for lunch, which some people like to say on Twitter.”<\/p>\n

Researchers will be able to look at the Twitter archive as a complete set of data, which they could then data-mine for interesting information.<\/p>\n

“There have been studies involved with what are the moods of the public at various times of the day in reaction to certain kinds of news events,” Lefurgy said. “There’s all these interesting kinds of mixing and matching that can be done using the tweets as a big set of data.”<\/p>\n

One benefit for the Library of Congress in receiving this large data set is that it’s been forced to stretch itself technologically.<\/p>\n

“It’s been difficult at times,” Lefurgy said. “But we firmly believe that we have to do this kind of thing because we anticipate that we’ll be bringing in large data sets again into the future. We don’t know specifically what, but certainly there’s no sign of data getting smaller or less complicated or less interesting.”<\/p>\n

The library’s Twitter partnership comes amid a renewed push by the administration and the National Archives and Records Administration for federal agencies to better archive their own social media postings and emails as potential government records.<\/p>\n

“We’re basically in the same situation as the National Archives, only on a much larger scale,” Lefurgy said. “We tend to have a much larger perspective in terms of what we collect.”<\/p>\n
