I’m already stressed.
Anyway, here’s a random thing:
My son David was in a bar in Rome on Sunday – this one, as a matter of fact – watching NFL games. So was Spike Lee, surrounded by a posse, of course. (His latest, poorly-reviewed film is set in Italy. Perhaps there was a premiere in Rome that weekend.) At one point, the posse changed tables, so David took the opportunity to go shake his hand.
My oldest son saw Julius Erving out on the town in Atlanta on Friday night (Dr. J lives in Atlanta, apparently)
My dad saw Juan Williams at the Cincinnati airport this past weekend. Oh, and for diversity’s sake, in the same conversation he told me about seeing George Mitchell at the Portland (ME) airport a couple of weeks ago.
Here’s what struck me:
David, who at one time dreamed of being a film auteur himself (and now will settle for the far more attainable goal of successful novelist) sees…Spike Lee.
Sports fiend and sports television employee Chris sees….Dr. J
Political scientist and observer Dad sees…Juan Williams and George Mitchell.
I got to thinking…what influences our seeing? We have our circles, our interests, the things and areas about which we know, the concepts which form the paradigms for our thinking, the faces that populate our consciousness of reality. What we notice and what passes us by. As in how, once you find out you’re pregnant, pregnant women are suddenly everywhere?
With those familiar faces in the forefront…what and who are we missing?

I got absorbed in, er, the news yesterday and since it’s not something I feel qualified on which to blog, I basically forgot about my blog and waiting comments and such.
