{"id":6791,"date":"2006-07-16T09:42:40","date_gmt":"2006-07-16T09:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/07\/the-lords-beggar.html"},"modified":"2006-07-16T09:42:40","modified_gmt":"2006-07-16T09:42:40","slug":"the-lords-beggar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/07\/the-lords-beggar.html","title":{"rendered":"The Lord&#8217;s Beggar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archindy.org\/criterion\/local\/2006\/07-14\/newsom.html\">A great story from Indianapolis about a most faithful disciple with a fascinating background:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>At 90, Lucious Newsom hitches up his blue bib overalls and climbs into his white van, preparing to continue his work as \u201cthe Lord\u2019s beggar for the poor\u201d\u2014a role he has served for 18 years in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling the van away from the curb, the retired Baptist minister-turned-Catholic waves goodbye to some of the 89 Hispanic families who have just spent the last 30 minutes filling their laundry baskets and milk crates with free tomatoes, onions, peppers and other vegetables\u2014produce that Newsom begged for and collected from an Indianapolis company shortly after he awakened at 4:15 a.m. on this sunny, steamy morning.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as a gold crucifix bounces around his neck\u2014a gift from the families he has just helped\u2014Newsom weaves the van through the city\u2019s near-westside, heading toward a place that he views as a beacon of hope and promise in an area scarred by poverty, crime and drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The place is called \u201cAnna\u2019s House,\u201d a clinic and learning center that will offer food, dental care, medical help and educational services, including tutoring and computer training for children.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled to open on July 29, Anna\u2019s House is Newsom\u2019s dream to make a lasting difference in the lives of people who struggle against the odds. The house is named in honor of Anna Molloy, a 10-year-old blond-haired, brown-eyed member of St. Jude Parish in Indianapolis, who helps Newsom feed the poor from her wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI named it for her because of her hard work and her love of Jesus,\u201d Newsom says. \u201cShe\u2019s on oxygen all the time, and she still keeps coming out to help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A great story from Indianapolis about a most faithful disciple with a fascinating background: At 90, Lucious Newsom hitches up his blue bib overalls and climbs into his white van, preparing to continue his work as \u201cthe Lord\u2019s beggar for the poor\u201d\u2014a role he has served for 18 years in Indianapolis. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
