An amendment to the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh’s anti-conversion law makes changing religions even harder. <\/p>\n

The new legislation passed last week amends the Freedom of Religion Act of 1968, which already made it difficult for citizens to embrace a creed of their choice, the bishops’ conference of India said. <\/p>\n

The norm introduced in Madhya Pradesh obliges individuals who intend to convert to inform authorities one month in advance, or face a fine of 1,000 rupees ($21) or a year’s imprisonment. <\/p>\n

The new law also calls for an investigation to determine if the conversion took place through allurement or coercion. <\/p>\n
