{"id":6333,"date":"2006-08-24T00:28:25","date_gmt":"2006-08-24T00:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/08\/the-book-meme.html"},"modified":"2006-08-24T00:28:25","modified_gmt":"2006-08-24T00:28:25","slug":"the-book-meme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/08\/the-book-meme.html","title":{"rendered":"The Book Meme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bettnet.com\/blog\/index.php\/weblog\/comments\/the_one_book_meme\/\">Dom tagged me with the &quot;One Book Meme&quot; &#8230;so here goes.<\/a> It will probably be lame.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>One book that changed your life:<\/strong><\/u> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0140231994\/spiritualthoug09\/104-7348310-6908739\"><em>The Early Church<\/em> by Henry Chadwick.<\/a> It was the primary text in the first quarter (yes, UT was on the<a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/chadwick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"154\" alt=\"Chadwick\" src=\"https:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/images\/chadwick.jpg\" width=\"100\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>&nbsp; quarter system, not semester, back then) of &quot;History of Western Religious Thought and Institutions&quot; taught by David Linge that I took as a sophomore. At that point I was a rather dissatisfied political science major (political science turning out to be more theoretical than I&#8217;d though it would be.), and this book, as well as the professor who taught the course, turned me into a history major. I found the history of Christianity endlessly fascinating. I still do. <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>One book that you&#8217;ve read more than once:<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp; Does <em>Goodnight Moon<\/em> count? <\/p>\n<p>Oh, you mean..read to <em>myself. <\/em>Okay&#8230;<em>Harriet the Spy? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still not good enough?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see&#8230;aside from all those I&#8217;ve had to teach and write about, which require multiple readings&#8230;I&#8217;ll say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0375701907\/spiritualthoug09\/104-7348310-6908739\"><em>Straight Man<\/em> by Richard Russo. <\/a>It&#8217;s hysterically funny and quite true, emotionally.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>One book you&#8217;d want on a desert island.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing the &quot;How to Build a Boat&quot; and &quot;How to make a Radio out of Coconuts&quot; have been done to death. I should say the Bible, but I think I&#8217;ll go out on a limb and say the collected works of William Shakespeare because there&#8217;s too much of him I&#8217;ve not read and I need to catch up. On that desert island, I should finally have the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>One Book that Made You Laugh<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/sin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"157\" alt=\"Sin\" src=\"https:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/images\/sin.jpg\" width=\"100\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> Well, I&#8217;ve already blown this. <em>Straight Man<\/em> makes me laugh. Oh, but I&#8217;d say the book that&#8217;s made me laugh the hardest and longest of any book I&#8217;ve ever read was surely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1570717567\/spiritualthoug09\/104-7348310-6908739\">Handling Sin by Michael Malone &#8211; <\/a>a masterwork of what they call the picaresque, a modern Don Quixote of a sorts, and once again, that aside from the absurdities and wild ride, actually packs quite an emotional punch. <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>One book that made you cry:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0020449313\/spiritualthoug09\/104-7348310-6908739\"><em>The Yearling<\/em>, of course.<\/a> Read it when I was twelve. Sobbed and sobbed&#8230;I think I even wrote inside the back cover, &quot;This is the saddest book I&#8217;ve ever read.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>One Book You Wish Had Been Written: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>All Your Nagging Questions: Answered! <\/em>by Jesus of Nazareth.<\/p>\n<p>Just kidding!<\/p>\n<p>Sort of.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>One Book You Wish Hadn&#8217;t Been Written:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Well, Dom mentioned <em>DVC <\/em>as a popular choice. So I&#8217;ll say&#8230;.er&#8230;<em>Joshua<\/em> by Girzone.<\/p>\n<p>Finally&#8230;<strong><u>One Book You&#8217;ve Been Meaning to Read:<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/014044274X\/spiritualthoug09\/104-7348310-6908739\">The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni &#8211; <\/a>I bought it, got a few pages into it, then life interrupted. I think I&#8217;ll try it again..I feel a responsibility to, for some reason. That or (from the other end of the spectrum) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0812968972\/sr=1-1\/qid=1156393521\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-7348310-6908739?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books\"><em>The Birth of Venus<\/em> by Sarah Dunant, which I picked up at an airport<\/a>. Whoops&#8230;that&#8217;s more than one book. I broke the rules, alas. I need something light after wrestling with the intricacies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0271023090\/sr=8-1\/qid=1156393647\/ref=pd_bbs_1\/104-7348310-6908739?ie=UTF8\">the Spiritual Franciscans for the past week or so. So I think Venus might win.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And so in the great tradition of meme-ing, I&#8217;ll tag&#8230;you all.
