A longer <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v442\/n7105\/full\/442858b.html\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">Nature<\/span><\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v442\/n7105\/full\/442858b.html\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\"> press release<\/span><\/a> accompanying the article explicitly stated only one cell was removed and the embryos survived. (It has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaisernetwork.org\/daily_reports\/rep_index.cfm?DR_ID=39579\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">since been corrected<\/span><\/a>, and Lanza\u2019s letter will be also.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advancedcell.com\/press-release\/advanced-cell-technology-announces-technique-to-generate-human-embryonic-stem-cells-that-maintains-developmental-potential-of-embryo\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">ACT\u2019s press release<\/span><\/a> declared repeatedly that the embryos survived, with CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advancedcell.com\/press-release\/advanced-cell-technology-appoints-mr-william-caldwell-iv-as-chief-executive-officer-and-appoints-dr-michael-west-as-chairman-president-and-chief-scientific-officer\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">William Caldwell IV<\/span><\/a> celebrating \u201cOur ability to create human embryonic cell lines and therapies without harming the embryo . . . \u201d <\/p>\n<p>Lanza also clearly lied in an audio interview for <em>Nature<\/em>, saying \u201cin this instance there is no harm to the embryo that we\u2019re biopsying.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/bb\/health\/july-dec06\/stemcells_08-24.html\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">So did Caldwell<\/span><\/a>, telling PBS\u2019s NewsHour \u201cIn this case, we do not destroy the embryo\u201d and therefore it was \u201ca major scientific breakthrough.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Lo! After steadily declining for six months, ACT stock suddenly <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/charts#chart2:symbol=actc.ob;range=6m;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;logscale=on;source\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">shot up 500%<\/span><\/a> and both Lanza and Caldwell, already quite wealthy, became quite wealthier. Then just two days after the <em>Nature<\/em> report, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/eastbay\/stories\/2006\/08\/21\/daily42.html\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">ACT announced<\/span><\/a> it had received commitments to raise about $13.5 million. <\/p>\n<p>But then along came busy-body <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshillaudio.org\/resources\/guest_detail.asp?ID=59\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">Richard Doerflinger<\/span><\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/index.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">United States Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/span><\/a>. In a detailed e-mail (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/comm\/archives\/2006\/06-164.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">later posted online<\/span><\/a>), he showed step-by-step that Lanza did nothing new besides perhaps reaching new heights in scientific dishonesty. <\/p>\n<p>To their credit, many in the media have admitted ACT and <em>Nature <\/em>took them for a ride had taken them for a ride. <\/p>\n<p>But ACT propagandist, er, uh, ethicist Ronald Green leapt to the company\u2019s defense. \u201cThe approach does not harm embryos; the experiment did,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/chi-0609010126sep01,1,6836388.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">Green insisted<\/span><\/a>. (Right. And \u201cI didn\u2019t kill the victim;\u201d the shooter said, \u201cthe bullets did!\u201d) An utterly unrepentant Lanza <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/08\/25\/AR2006082501248.html\"><span style=\"color: #00637b\">tossed off the backlash criticism<\/span><\/a> as merely indicative of how politicized stem cell research has become. Now <em>there\u2019s<\/em> something he knows about.<\/p>\n<p>Lanza has always been more salesman than scientist, constantly inveighing against the federal funding restrictions that restrict the growth of his bank account. Yet the media treat him as an impartial source on all things stem cell.
