{"id":596,"date":"2008-04-30T11:06:48","date_gmt":"2008-04-30T11:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2008\/04\/bishop-gene-at-rbte.html"},"modified":"2008-04-30T11:06:48","modified_gmt":"2008-04-30T11:06:48","slug":"bishop-gene-at-rbte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2008\/04\/bishop-gene-at-rbte.html","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Gene at RBTE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting of Book Day:<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s discussion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/new.php?n=12482\" target=\"_blank\">here and there <\/a>about Episcopal Gene Robinson being invited to be present\/talk at the RBTE &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbte.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Religious Bookseller&#8217;s Trade Exhibition,<\/a> which is being described as a &#8220;Catholic&#8221; book trade show.<br \/>\nWell, sort of.\u00a0 But not really.<br \/>\nRBTE is a joint effort of publishers related to what&#8217;s called &#8220;liturgical&#8221; churches. Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, mostly. And, yes, mostly Catholics. But it is not a &#8220;Catholic&#8221; group. It&#8217;s a business coalition, so to speak, which gives publishers associated with and serving these liturgical\/mainline churches a place to market their wares &#8211; as distinct from, say, CBA.<br \/>\n(Note &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicmarketing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Marketing Network<\/a> is another trade group, for Catholics, and formed out of dissatisfaction w\/RBTE).<br \/>\nThere are different sorts of events associated with the show, a few for everyone &#8211; all booksellers or publishers present &#8211; but more divided according to denomination.\u00a0\u00a0 Robinson&#8217;s scheduled to speak to the Episcopalians.\u00a0 It seems to me last year there was someone equally controversial scheduled (well, perhaps not equally &#8211; that would be difficult &#8211; but close). Can&#8217;t remember who it was.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rbte.net\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=12&amp;Itemid=26\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the schedule of events<\/a>. As you can see, most of the dinners\/breakfasts\/talks are separated by denomination and those that aren&#8217;t are business-related. One of the exceptions is the final luncheon, at which the speaker is Raymond Arroyo.<br \/>\nAnd no, I&#8217;m not going &#8211; of all years.
