It was the center of Lombard rule, the Lombards being the people who put Rome and environs under constant threat in the 7th and 8th centuries (hence&#8230;.<em>Lombardy)<\/em>, and folks kept going back and forth from Pavia in the chapter I was reading last night.<\/p>\n<p>And then this morning, I open up PRF and&#8230;in 2007, it will reportedly be Benedict heading to Pavia <a href=\"http:\/\/freeforumzone.leonardo.it\/viewmessaggi.aspx?f=65482&amp;idd=439&amp;p=10\">to pray at St. Augustine&#8217;s tomb<\/a>&nbsp; &#8211; just a couple of weeks ago, on the feast of St. Augustine, Fr. Z <a href=\"http:\/\/wdtprs.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/augustines-bones-where-are-they-now\/\">had a post on how St. Augustine&#8217;s bones got to Pavia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As for me, I was just as interested in the enormous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paradoxplace.com\/Perspectives\/Venice%20&amp;%20N%20Italy\/Pavia\/Certosa_di_Pavia.htm\">Carthusian foundation &#8211; look at this photo &#8211; <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/cottagesjun05d7751sar800.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"150\" alt=\"Cottagesjun05d7751sar800\" src=\"https:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/images\/cottagesjun05d7751sar800.jpg\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.paradoxplace.com\/Perspectives\/Venice%20&amp;%20N%20Italy\/Pavia\/Certosa_di_Pavia.htm\">Source)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those little rooftops are of Carthusian hermitages &#8211; 24 of them (not in use any more, of course) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.certosadipavia.com\/\">Certosa di Pavia <\/a>, maintained as a monument since the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>So anyway&#8230;the Pope&#8217;s going to Pavia in 2007. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m reading a book about the Papal States (gripping! page-turner! Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
