The Little Sisters need $300,000 in cash and services each month to run the Jeanne Jugan Residence, which is home to 100 elderly people who could not otherwise afford such care, said Sister Cecilia Mary, the head administrator.<\/p>\n

In addition, the sisters maintain 24-unit apartment complex for "independently living" seniors and also run a five-day-a-week senior center, providing hot meals and activities for those living outside the residence.<\/p>\n

Of those operating costs, $200,000 is covered by income, raised primarily through legacies from individuals and grants from a range of foundations, many of which are not Catholic, said Sister Cecilia. No regular funding comes from the Catholic Church or the Archdiocese of Washington.<\/p>\n

For philosophical reasons, the group has no endowment.<\/p>\n

"We depend on divine providence. That’s part of our vocation as Little Sisters," Sister Cecilia said.<\/p>\n

Raising the remaining $100,000 a month in operating costs falls largely to the begging sister, though Sister Cecilia said that most months, that sum remains an unattained goal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
