{"id":5326,"date":"2006-01-20T00:15:31","date_gmt":"2006-01-20T00:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/01\/i-hate-this-time-of-year.html"},"modified":"2006-01-20T00:15:31","modified_gmt":"2006-01-20T00:15:31","slug":"i-hate-this-time-of-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/01\/i-hate-this-time-of-year.html","title":{"rendered":"I hate this time of year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because it&#8217;s the time I have to start reporting on the risible and ridiculous spectacle of one of the Dumbest Plays Ever Written, one which I call the VMonologues, (and which I have seen most of, on HBO) being performed all over the nation (around February 14) in front of audiences of privileged, independent young women who are under the impression that They Are Oppressed and that this play will set them free, and more than that, being performed at Catholic colleges. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardinalnewmansociety.org\/Publications\/News\/monologues_06.htm#vm%20list%202006\">The Cardinal Newman Society keeps us posted<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the years we have been following this, a few colleges and bishops have insisted that the productions not occur. I think. Maybe. Well, at least have issued statements disassociating themselves from the production. At last, finally, and &#8217;bout time, we&#8217;ve got a lengthy, coherent statement by a college president <a href=\"http:\/\/www.providence.edu\/Administration\/Presidents+Office\/Vagina+Monologues.htm\">telling us why, with Catholic teaching and sensibility as the paradigm, it&#8217;s not going to happen on his watch:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Doubtless some will reply that this is a violation of artistic freedom.&nbsp; But artistic freedom on a Catholic campus cannot mean the complete license to perform or display any work of art regardless of its intellectual or moral content.&nbsp; Any institution which sanctioned works of art that undermined its deepest values would be inauthentic, irresponsible, and ultimately self-destructive.&nbsp; At Providence College artistic freedom is governed by the values embodied in our mission statement.&nbsp; A Catholic college cannot sanction the performance of works of art that are inimical to the teaching of the Church in an area as important as female sexuality and the dignity of women.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.providence.edu\/\">Providence College in Rhode Island. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.providence.edu\/Administration\/Presidents+Office\/\">A standing O for Fr. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
