{"id":5311,"date":"2006-10-12T23:13:08","date_gmt":"2006-10-12T23:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/10\/varia-16.html"},"modified":"2006-10-12T23:13:08","modified_gmt":"2006-10-12T23:13:08","slug":"varia-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/10\/varia-16.html","title":{"rendered":"Varia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.from the emailbox and elsewhere:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/generationsforlife.org\/2006\/1011\/former-abortion-provider-speaks-at-loyola-u-chicago\/\">An interesting speaker at Loyola of Chicago<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Judith Arcana was recently invited by the Loyola University Chicago Women\u2019s Studies Department to be a guest lecturer in a bioethics class (Bioethics 395: The Ethics of Human Reproduction), and to do a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luc.edu\/womenstudies\/calendar.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #238732\">performance<\/span><\/a> of her own work. <\/p>\n<p>Who is Judith Arcana, you ask? <\/p>\n<p>For two years, she was a member of The Abortion Counseling Service of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwluherstory.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #238732\">Chicago Women\u2019s Liberation Union<\/span><\/a> \u2014 which was better known by its nickname, \u201cJane\u201d. Its history spanned a roughly five year period prior to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prolifeaction.org\/faq\/abortion.htm#roe\"><span style=\"color: #238732\"><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and <em>Doe v. Bolton<\/em><\/span><\/a> Supreme Court decisions in 1973. (The picture of Arcana at the top of this post was taken during her time with Jane.)<\/p>\n<p>According to the CWLU Herstory Editorial Committee: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Jane was the CWLU\u2019s underground illegal abortion provider that performed over 11,000 safe abortions, many performed by Jane members themselves. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwluherstory.com\/CWLUAbout\/cwluintro.html\"><span style=\"color: #238732\">source<\/span><\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, you read that correctly. Jane wasn\u2019t your garden variety \u201cpro-choice\u201d organization; it wasn\u2019t even an abortion referral service. <em>The members of Jane actually performed abortions<\/em>. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/richmondcatholic.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/eucharist-as-bargaining-chip-office-of.html\">Back to Richmond: <\/a>In case you&#8217;ve forgotten the Richmond Catholic Blog &#8211; it&#8217;s still there, still reporting on doings in that diocese. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
