We have two levels of care: Independent Living and Skilled Nursing. We offer admission to low income, low asset elderly. Due to the tremendous need for homes like ours, we have a waiting list, and due to our good care, our residents are with us for a long time, so admissions are infrequent. During a renovation phase two years ago, admissions were on hold for a period of months. Perhaps this is when Lourdes’ clients applied. I apologize if a clear explanation was not given.

A few of our senior volunteers who qualify, have their names on the waiting list, and may eventually become residents. We have 82 residents, three are former volunteers, five are priests. Ninety-eight percent of our skilled nursing residents are Medicaid recipients. Medicaid covers only 60% of what it takes to operate our home, thus we depend heavily upon donations. In all truth, we barely make ends meet. Yet we strive to offer the best that we can possibly give our residents, caring for them as we would care for Jesus himself. The little sisters do not beg for themselves, but rather for the elderly whom they care for.

The Little Sisters of the Poor

We had a thread last week on this order’s work in DC.
