{"id":4907,"date":"2006-10-30T17:07:55","date_gmt":"2006-10-30T17:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/10\/translator.html"},"modified":"2006-10-30T17:07:55","modified_gmt":"2006-10-30T17:07:55","slug":"translator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/10\/translator.html","title":{"rendered":"Translator?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catholique-metz.cef.fr\/index.php?doc=accueil\/article&amp;numero_article=899\">10 French bishops make their views known:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>R\u00e9unis, le 25 octobre 2006 \u00e0 Lons-le-Saunier, dans le cadre de l\u2019Instance R\u00e9gional \u00c9v\u00eaques Pr\u00eatres, les \u00e9v\u00eaques de la Province eccl\u00e9siastique de Besan\u00e7on et les \u00e9v\u00eaques des dioc\u00e8ses concordataires de Strasbourg et de Metz ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire part au Saint-Si\u00e8ge de leurs inqui\u00e9tudes suscit\u00e9es par la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019Institut du Bon Pasteur, dans l\u2019archidioc\u00e8se de Bordeaux, et l\u2019\u00e9ventualit\u00e9 de la publication d\u2019un <em>Motu proprio<\/em> du Pape Beno\u00eet XVI g\u00e9n\u00e9ralisant l\u2019usage du rite tridentin pour la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de la messe.<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9v\u00eaques, soucieux du bien commun et de l\u2019unit\u00e9 de l\u2019Eglise, ont pris cette initiative en raison du trouble ressenti par beaucoup de fid\u00e8les, de diacres et de pr\u00eatres de leurs dioc\u00e8ses respectifs.<\/p>\n<p>Estimant que la liturgie est l\u2019expression de la th\u00e9ologie de l\u2019Eglise, les \u00e9v\u00eaques redoutent que la g\u00e9n\u00e9ralisation de l\u2019usage du Missel romain de 1962 ne relativise les orientations du concile Vatican II. Une telle d\u00e9cision risquerait aussi de mettre \u00e0 mal l\u2019unit\u00e9 entre les pr\u00eatres, autant qu\u2019entre les fid\u00e8les.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis de nombreuses ann\u00e9es d\u2019importants efforts de formation liturgique ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9s, les \u00e9v\u00eaques s\u2019en r\u00e9jouissent et encouragent leurs dioc\u00e9sains \u00e0 poursuivre le travail engag\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The gist: They&#8217;re against the establishment of the Good Shepherd Institute and any &quot;freeing&quot; of the Tridentine Mass. (So&#8230;I guess this is more than a rumor?) Unity seems to be the concern, particularly unity among priests, as well as an estimation that the the theology of the 1962 Missal is not consistent with the orientation of Vatican II.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hermeneutic of Discontinuity? <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And&#8230;what is this supposed to accomplish? Are they trying to discourage the Pope? Are they saying no matter what the Pope says, they won&#8217;t allow it? <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><u>Translation, thanks to Blind Squirrel, in the comments:<\/u><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Meeting on October 25, 2006 at Lons-le-Saunier, under the auspices of the<\/em> <em>Regional Authority of Bishops and Priests, the bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Besan\u00e7on and the bishops of the concordative dioceses* of Strasbourg and Metz have resolved to inform the Holy See of their concern aroused by the creation of the Bon Pasteur Institute, in the archdiocese of Bordeaux, and the possibility of the publication of a Motu proprio by Pope Benedict XVI bringing the Tridentine rite into general use for the celebration of the Mass.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The bishops, out of concern for the common good and the unity of the Church, have taken this initiative in response to the disquiet felt by many of the faithful, the deacons and the priests of their respective dioceses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Considering as they do that the liturgy is the expression of the Church&#8217;s theology, the bishops fear that the entry into general use of the Roman Missal of 1962 will call into question the direction taken by the second Vatican Council. Such a decision also has the potential to cause harm to the unity existing between priests, no less than that between the faithful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Over the course of many years, important liturgical development efforts have been carried out.
