Although, he was actually too strong-willed for it. His parents were at their wits’ ends with him, and their minister recommended Dr. Dobson’s book to them. In the beginning, they thought it was working. My husband, then age 7, was so completely taken aback by their "new approach," he had to find out what was wrong. One night, they hired a babysitter and went out to celebrate their new, successful parenting skills. They returned home to find their little boy sitting up late, reading "The Strong-Willed Child." (He had a great vocabulary at 7 and was able to read almost the whole book that evening.)

He got up off the couch, glowering at them, and declared, "This is a STUPID book. Don’t you EVER try this on me again." Then he dropped the book into a garbage pail and went to bed. If they ever tried to use one of Dobson’s techniques after that, he called them on it: "That’s not your idea. You got it out of that STUPID book."

On the upside, he grew up quite capable of resisting peer pressure to drink, smoke pot and sleep around. He’s hard-working, intelligent and independently minded — and father to three more kids who appear to be just like him, albeit in slightly different ways.

Of course, we get lots of great comments on a daily basis.
