Everyone’s got one at least. Here’s mine, told here before:

Our Fort Wayne airport is small – 8 gates, I think. So no huge lines, unless one of the machine breaks – which has happened.

But anyway, one day, I was waiting for someone, and an Amish woman went through security.

(A lot of people think the Amish can’t travel on motorized transportation. They can – they just can’t drive it. We have a lot of Amish around here, much discussed before, as well)

She set off the alarm. They wanded her, patted her. Couldn’t figure out the problem. Over and over. She beeped and beeped.

Of course, the irony is that many AMISH DON’T WEAR METAL – no snaps, no zippers, no nothing. I have no idea what was setting the thing off, but I am not kidding that they worked her over for ten minutes. She bore it all very patiently, but honestly, those of us in the area sort of stood, watching, stunned. You could see it in the looks we gave one another, "So GLAD TSA is on top of that terror threat from 50-year old AMISH WOMEN."

The worst security line I ever saw was at BWI – the Baltimore airport. And it was like 5 am or something, so it was doubly distressing. But it actually moved pretty fast. But then I’ve never had to go through security at say, Atlanta or Chicago, since they’re always transfer points for me.

…besides liturgy…airport security, of course.
