{"id":4351,"date":"2006-02-23T09:46:59","date_gmt":"2006-02-23T09:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/02\/do-no-harm.html"},"modified":"2006-02-23T09:46:59","modified_gmt":"2006-02-23T09:46:59","slug":"do-no-harm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/02\/do-no-harm.html","title":{"rendered":"Do no harm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-morales22feb22,0,704779.story?coll=la-home-headlines\">California execution process under, er, fire:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Morales furor began a week ago when U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel declared that California&#8217;s three-stage drug cocktail of a sedative, paralytic drug and heart-stopping chemical \u2014 the same protocol used in 37 of the 38 states with lethal injection \u2014 could mask, rather than eliminate, an inmate&#8217;s pain during execution.<\/p>\n<p>Fogel said the state would have to modify its execution procedure or he would hold a full hearing on the process in May.<\/p>\n<p>To address his concern, prison officials elected to go forward just after midnight Monday with two doctors on hand to ensure that the sedative would be sufficient to deaden the pain of the heart-stopping drug.
