{"id":4265,"date":"2005-08-08T00:19:08","date_gmt":"2005-08-08T00:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2005\/08\/pressed-into-service.html"},"modified":"2005-08-08T00:19:08","modified_gmt":"2005-08-08T00:19:08","slug":"pressed-into-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2005\/08\/pressed-into-service.html","title":{"rendered":"Pressed into Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/msnbc.msn.com\/id\/8714275\/\">Mario Cuomo and Doug Kmiec on Meet the Press today, on the Roberts nominee:<\/a> The link is a transcript of the show.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirrorofjustice.com\/mirrorofjustice\/2005\/08\/kmiec_cuomo_and.html\">Rick Garnett has highlights and comments at MOJ<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I wish the point had been made that the Church&#8217;s teaching on abortion &#8212; whatever its merits &#8212; is not merely an &quot;ipsedixitism&quot; (assuming that is a word).&nbsp; Governor Cuomo has said often that he is personally pro-life, and I believe him.&nbsp; But does he really believe &#8212; because he is convinced that abortion is, or can be, the intentional killing of an innocent human being &#8212; that abortion is immoral (it the same way he believes that, say, human chattel slavery is immoral)?&nbsp; Or, is it just that he believes that, as a Catholic, he has do go along, in his personal life, with &quot;what the Pope says&quot;?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Next, I came to think, watching the segment, that the &quot;back story&quot; to the whole Roberts and Catholicism business is the lingering anger of many Catholics over the Kerry and Communion business.&nbsp; That is, Governor Cuomo &#8212; like E.J. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/08\/01\/AR2005080101430.html\"><span style=\"color: #003366\">Dionne<\/span><\/a> and Michael <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/commentary\/la-oe-mcgough1aug01,0,3808402.story?coll=la-news-comment-opinions\"><span style=\"color: #003366\">McGough<\/span><\/a> in their recent op-eds &#8212; seemed in the interview with Russert almost eager for Roberts to say, to the Senate, that he would, although Catholic, comply with his oath to uphold the Constitution, because &#8212; in Cuomo&#8217;s view &#8212; this will create a &quot;political difficulty&quot; for those Republicans who might have enjoyed it when some bishops were publicly critical of abortion-rights-supporting candidates and politicians. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mario Cuomo and Doug Kmiec on Meet the Press today, on the Roberts nominee: The link is a transcript of the show.
