{"id":4034,"date":"2006-12-12T10:57:31","date_gmt":"2006-12-12T10:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2006\/12\/gypsies.html"},"modified":"2006-12-12T10:57:31","modified_gmt":"2006-12-12T10:57:31","slug":"gypsies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2006\/12\/gypsies.html","title":{"rendered":"Gypsies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/english\/visualizza.phtml?sid=99725\">A conference:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A meeting began in the Vatican for national directors who oversee the pastoral care of Gypsies. <\/p>\n<p>The meeting, which opened today, is focusing on relations with the itinerant population that numbers 36 million worldwide, half of them in India. <\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the meeting is to study and stimulate the implementation of the &quot;Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of Gypsies,&quot; the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/pontifical_councils\/migrants\/documents\/rc_pc_migrants_doc_20051208_orientamenti-zingari_en.html\">document<\/a> of the Church, in its universal dimension, dedicated to gypsies and published on Dec. 8, 2005, by the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers. <\/p>\n<p>The organizing Vatican dicastery stated in a communiqu\u00e9 that the meeting is being attended by the national directors of all those countries in which there is a specific pastoral program for Gypsies. Included are European countries, the United States, Mexico, Brazil and India. <\/p>\n<p>Participating in the meeting for the first time are representatives from Bangladesh, Chile, the Philippines and Indonesia. <\/p>\n<p>The Gypsies, known by different names, such as Romany, constitute a specific ethnic group which probably originated in northwestern India. Amy has written columns for Our Sunday Visitor and Catholic News Service at times over the past twenty years. Her articles have been published in venues ranging from Our Sunday Visitor to the New York Times to Commonweal. She has written 17 books. 18, if you included the as yet tragically unpublished novel. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
