The southern part of the archdiocese \u2014 the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan, as well as Yonkers and central Westchester County \u2014 is hardest hit in the recommendations. About two dozen parishes would be closed, although about a third in this group have been significantly downsized or essentially closed already, Cardinal Egan said in his column. They simply have not gone through the steps required in canon law to be officially closed. <\/p>\n

About a dozen of the closed parishes, however, would get some kind of chapel or mission attached to other parishes. It is also possible that a new parish will be created.<\/p>\n

In sum, Cardinal Egan said, after the various additions and subtractions, there will be a dozen fewer places of worship in the southern part of the archdiocese.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
