It&#8217;s true that the bill creates a new class of felony<br \/>re illegal immigration.&nbsp; What many people are omitting from this debate is that an amendment was put in front of the House <br \/>of Representatives that would STRIKE the provision the Bishops are so concerned about.&nbsp; This amendment was offered after <br \/>numerous complaints by Democrats and Republicans alike regarding the language.<\/p>\n<p>This amendment failed, primarilly because of Democratic opposition&nbsp; (see <a href=\"http:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2005\/roll655.xml\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #003399\">Roll Call Vote 655<\/span><\/a>).&nbsp; Now, of course, it&#8217;s being<br \/>used by the Democrats to tar the Republicans for being anti-immigrant.&nbsp; Whatever.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The original amendment can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rules.house.gov\/109\/specialrules\/hr4347_2\/109hr4347_sensenn133.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #003399\">here<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The Description of the Amendment is as follows&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span><strong>Sensenbrenner #133 <\/strong><br \/>At the Administration&#8217;s request, reduces the maximum sentence for illegal entry and illegal presence to six months. <strong>(10 minutes)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><strong><span>And another note from the same source:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\">The amendment I was speaking of was not the assisting illegals issue, but creating a new felony for illegals in general.&nbsp;
