Hong Kong’s cardinal-designate Joseph Zen suggested Thursday the Vatican might be willing to compromise on the biggest obstacle to its tense relations with Beijing — the question of who should appoint bishops in China. <\/p>\n

A day before he was due to be elevated as cardinal in Rome, the 74-year-old bishop said China and the Holy See had begun talks on rebuilding relations strained over 55 years and was optimistic fences could be mended. <\/p>\n

"I agree that the situation on the mainland is different and perhaps the Pope might make some compromises… but no way should they allow (China) to have a say on everything," he told Hong Kong-based Cable TV news. <\/p>\n

"For example, the Vatican would let (China) choose one of three names. That would be possible and it’s been done like that before," he added<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
