A line of penitents lined the left and right naves, where priests sat behind small screens labeled \u201cEnglish\/Malayalam,\u201d hearing confessions. It\u2019s a practice I\u2019ve encountered in Italy \u2013 this was the first time I was seeing it in India. I\u2019m a little ambivalent about the whole thing \u2013 smacks way too much of \u201csacramental magic\u201d in my opinion (\u201cget your confession in to get your Eucharist.\u201d). It\u2019s approved by the Holy See, however, and, it was nice to see so many people lined up for confession!<\/p>\n<p><em>snip<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mass ended with a Marian hymn, and, as seems to be normal in India, the bulk of the congregation remained behind in silent prayer. I slipped out a few minutes later. Outside the gates a host of hawkers had set up shop, with a variety of Christmas-ware spread out on tarps on the ground, mainly cards and tinsel. I picked up two Santa hats for the niece and nephew (she wanted Rs. 35 each. Her articles have been published in venues ranging from Our Sunday Visitor to the New York Times to Commonweal. She has written 17 books. 18, if you included the as yet tragically unpublished novel. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
