In merito alla esecuzione capitale di Saddam Hussein, avvenuta questa notte, il Direttore della Sala Stampa della Santa Sede, Padre Federico Lombardi, S.J., ha rilasciato questa mattina ai giornalisti la seguente dichiarazione<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Una esecuzione capitale \u00e8 sempre una notizia tragica, motivo di tristezza, anche quando si tratta di una persona che si \u00e8 resa colpevole di gravi delitti.<\/p>\n

La posizione della Chiesa cattolica – contraria alla pena di morte – \u00e8 stata pi\u00f9 volte ribadita.<\/p>\n

L\u2019 uccisione del colpevole non \u00e8 la via per ricostruire la giustizia e riconciliare la societ\u00e0. Vi \u00e8 anzi il rischio che al contrario si alimenti lo spirito di vendetta e si semini nuova violenza.<\/p>\n

In questo tempo oscuro della vita del popolo iracheno non si pu\u00f2 che auspicare che tutti i responsabili facciano veramente ogni sforzo perch\u00e9 in una situazione drammatica si aprano infine spiragli di riconciliazione e di pace.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

DECLARATION OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE PRESS OFFICE OF THE HOLY SEE, FR. FEDERICO LOMBARDI S.J.<\/p>\n

With regard to the capital punishment of Saddam Hussein, which happened last night, the director of Press Office of the Holy See, Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J., released the following declaration to journalists this morning:<\/em><\/p>\n

Capital punishment is always tragic news, a motive of sadness, even when it\u2019s a case of a person guilty of grave crimes.<\/p>\n

The position of the Catholic Church against the death penalty has been confirmed many times.<\/p>\n

The execution of the guilty party is not a path to reconstruct justice and to reconcile society. Indeed, there is the risk that, on the contrary, it may augment the spirit of revenge and sow seeds of new violence.<\/p>\n

In this dark time in the life of the Iraqi people, it can only be hoped that all the responsible parties truly will make every effort so that, in this dramatic situation, possibilities of reconciliation and peace may finally be opened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
