Visibly shaken and speaking extemporaneously, the Pontiff said this morning that he \u201creceived very sad, terrifying news; that Brother Roger, founder of the Taiz\u00e9 communities, was killed in a knife attack, most likely by a deranged woman\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis most sad news strikes me even more because just yesterday I received a letter from him,\u201d the Pope said, \u201ca very moving and loving letter in which he was wholeheartedly one with the Pope and all those who were in Cologne\u201d for World Youth Days, an event that to which he could not come because of his health conditions, but in which he was \u201cspiritually present\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Benedict XVI also noted that, in his letter, Brother Roger said he intended to come to Rome and that the Taiz\u00e9 community wanted to walk with the new Pope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this moment of sadness we can only commend to the Lord\u2019s goodness the soul of His faithful servant who has reached eternal happiness,\u201d the Pope added. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&amp;u=\/nm\/20050817\/wl_nm\/pope_forget_dc_1\">Also at the General Audience: Pope apologizes for being forgetful &#8211; twice.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Benedict is saddened by the murder of Brother Roger At the end of today\u2019s catechesis in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Benedict XVI paid homage to Brother Roger, who was killed yesterday in Taiz\u00e9 (eastern France).
