But this isn&#8217;t the only form of rape increasingly downplayed in the crusade for condoms. Pushing for condom distribution programs in prisons, a June <em>New York Times<\/em> <a class=\"arttext\" href=\"\/ct\/2005\/123\/51.0.html\" target=\"_blank\">editorial<\/a> declared, &quot;Studies show . . . that same-sex encounters behind bars are more common than prison officials care to admit.&quot; Actually, those <a class=\"arttext\" href=\"http:\/\/hrw.org\/english\/docs\/2001\/04\/19\/usdom168.htm\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> show 20 percent of male inmates report being forced into sexual activity while in prison. Just how would condoms fix <em>that<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"arttext\">In a July syndicated column, PBS host <a class=\"arttext\" href=\"http:\/\/seattlepi.nwsource.com\/opinion\/233351_erbe21.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Erbe<\/a> mocked abstinence as an answer to the African AIDS epidemic due to the &quot;high rate of rape in some African countries. \u2026 How is teaching abstinence at all relevant in the case of child rape victims?&quot; Her answer: Condom distribution.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"arttext\" dir=\"ltr\">What I&#8217;ve never understood is the double standard. Don&#8217;t smoke. Don&#8217;t ever. Kids &#8211; don&#8217;t smoke. Not even one a day. It&#8217;s really, really, bad for you. In other words: ABSTAIN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"arttext\" dir=\"ltr\">But sex? Eh, be safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"arttext\" dir=\"ltr\">(Which somehow has translated into skyrocketing rates of STDs, teen pregnancies, abortions not to speak of hardened, cynical hearts encased in the worn-out bodies of 21-year olds.
