{"id":3353,"date":"2007-01-21T08:26:44","date_gmt":"2007-01-21T08:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2007\/01\/marching-out-west.html"},"modified":"2007-01-21T08:26:44","modified_gmt":"2007-01-21T08:26:44","slug":"marching-out-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2007\/01\/marching-out-west.html","title":{"rendered":"Marching out West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was the third annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkforlifewc.com\/index.htm\">West Coast March for Life out in San Francisco<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2007\/01\/21\/ABORTION.TMP\">Here&#8217;s the SF Chronicle Report<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This year&#8217;s rally included an invocation by San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer, whose prayer asked God to &quot;renew a readiness (among people) to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>While speakers at Justin Herman Plaza compared the fight against abortion to the civil rights struggle, defenders of legal abortion held a small but spirited counter-rally at Pier 7 under a banner proclaiming, &quot;Forward Not Back: Reproductive Justice for All.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>As the anti-abortion march began moving slowly up the Embarcadero, the counter-protesters waved pro-choice signs and chanted such slogans as, &quot;Our body! Our lives! Our right to decide!&quot; behind metal barriers. <\/p>\n<p>Police soon allowed the counter-rally to march alongside the opponents &#8212; with a buffer zone maintained not only by several dozen officers but by joggers, tourists and other people drawn to the Embarcadero on a mild Saturday afternoon. <\/p>\n<p>The march attracted more than 20,000 participants, organizers claimed, with charter buses bringing people from as far as San Diego and Reno. Amy grew up in a number of places - Indiana - Washington, DC - Lubbock Texas - Arlington, Virginia - DeKalb, Illinois - Lawrence, Kansas - and Knoxville, Tennessee, where the family settled in 1973. She attended Knoxville Catholic High School, then the University of Tennessee where she majored in history. She received an MA in Church History from Vanderbilt University, where she wrote a thesis on the changing role of women in 19th century American Protestantism, and the ways Scripture was used to justify those changes. She worked as as a teacher in Catholic high schools and a Parish Director of Religious Education and started writing for the diocesan press - the Florida Catholic - in 1988. Amy has written columns for Our Sunday Visitor and Catholic News Service at times over the past twenty years. Her articles have been published in venues ranging from Our Sunday Visitor to the New York Times to Commonweal. She has written 17 books. 18, if you included the as yet tragically unpublished novel. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
