Once again, the unfaithful get front row seats while the laborers in the vineyard are told to shut up. This is of a piece with the detonation over <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/2007\/01\/wedges.html#comments\" target=\"_blank\">the Buffalo Deacon\u2019s homily<\/a> (poor, poor &quot;Brian,&quot; <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/2007\/01\/more_from_buffa.html\" target=\"_blank\">whose remarkably base political whoredom is noted here<\/a>) and the Archbishop of Washington\u2019s studied refusal to directly address life issues with any Catholics in public life. Yes, the Church\u2019s leaders preach one thing while coddling the opponents within her ranks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shaidle.blogmatrix.com\/:entry:shaidle-2007-01-30-0003\/\">Kathy Shaidle, who links to a Hugh Hewitt interview:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>HH: No, but I mean, the whole abortion controversy, that\u2019s just\u2026 you compartmentalize that and put that aside? <\/p>\n<p>TM: <em>I can, as can many Catholics<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>HH: But I know many Catholics do, but do you think it\u2019s right\u2026Do you go to Mass and all that stuff, Terry? <\/p>\n<p>TM: <em>I go\u2026 yeah, I do.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>HH: You do? <\/p>\n<p>TM: <strong><em>In fact, I\u2019m up to be on the Knights of Malta right now. They\u2019ve just asked me to join the Knights of Malta.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>HH: Oh, we\u2019d better put out a word. <\/p>\n<p>TM: <em>Are you one of those?<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>HH: I\u2019ve got friends in the Knights of Malta, yeah. You might not come back from your first trip to Rome. <\/p>\n<p>TM: <em>You need to go into the Knights of Malta.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>HH: Huh? <\/p>\n<p>TM: <em><strong>And as you know, the Holy Father himself, John Paul II, blessed my wife\u2019s engagement ring when I wound up being at a private Mass for us in his private chapel.<\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n<p>HH: <strong>Nice picture.<\/strong> I know. Members of the Order seek to glorify God through his or her work with the sick and the poor and witness of the Catholic faith.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">AKA club for wealthy Catholics, many of whom are deeply serious about their faith &#8211; I&#8217;ve met a few who were profoundly pro-life, living lives of great generosity to the poor, just like the mission statement says.
