Three years ago at Notre Dame, as an alternative to the VMonologues<\/em>, a group of students came up with the idea of a conference inspired by the thought and witness of Edith Stein, "promoting the development of the new feminism." This year’s conference was called "Toward Integral Healing for Women and Culture"<\/a>. Over at Mirror of Justice, Michael Scaperlanda begins a report:<\/a><\/p>\n

Speakers included:<\/p>\n

  • MOJ friend and alum, Paolo Carrozza, used examples from his work on the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights in his lecture entitled \u201cHuman Rights, Violence against Women and Reflections on Deus Caritas Est.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Kathleen Gibney, formerly of the Notre Dame psychology department, spoke on \u201cAwakening the Spirit of Women:  <\/span>Gifts of Personal Reflection and Social
    Action.\u201d<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Economist Catherine Ruth Pakaluk spoke \u201cSplitting the Baby:  <\/span>Creative Solutions for Mothers in a Second-Best Economy.\u201d<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Ethics professor Janet Smith talked on \u201cContraception:  <\/span>A Women\u2019s Friend or Foe.\u201d<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • Theologian Pia de Solenni spoke on \u201cRenewing the Feminine Image.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Philosopher Maria Fedoryka spoke on \u201cEdith Stein and the Vocation to Love\u201d<\/span> <\/li>\n

    All of these talks were excellent, giving us fruitful information, ideas to chew on, and a basis for grounding human dignity and the new feminism in our nature as creatures created in God\u2019s image. The conference would have been worth it just to feast on the wisdom and knowledge of these thoughtful women (and man). But, the conference was so much more than this. Students addressed real life problems of sexual assault, eating disorders, and sexual addiction. And, other speakers, from magazine publishers to direct service providers spoke about their work in healing a wounded culture. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Amy has written columns for Our Sunday Visitor and Catholic News Service at times over the past twenty years. Her articles have been published in venues ranging from Our Sunday Visitor to the New York Times to Commonweal. She has written 17 books. 18, if you included the as yet tragically unpublished novel. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
