An e-mail advising more than 1,700 Xavier students to leave was sent out by the administration on Friday afternoon, said Calvin Tregre, senior vice president of finance and administration. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe encouraged those students who were able to leave, to leave,\u201d he said. \u201cWe tried to arrange for buses to transport the remaining students to safety, but there wasn\u2019t one bus available in New Orleans.\u201d <\/p>\n

Initially, students were scattered in five campus dormitories. On Aug. 29, they were gathered up and placed in three buildings. <\/p>\n

On a six-burner gas stove at their convent, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament cooked spaghetti and meatballs, grits, pork and beans, rice and any frozen foods that could be salvaged from the campus cafeteria.
