{"id":2304,"date":"2007-03-29T23:04:28","date_gmt":"2007-03-29T23:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2007\/03\/close-a-catholic-school.html"},"modified":"2007-03-29T23:04:28","modified_gmt":"2007-03-29T23:04:28","slug":"close-a-catholic-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2007\/03\/close-a-catholic-school.html","title":{"rendered":"Close a Catholic school.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/03282007\/news\/regionalnews\/say_it_saint_joe____tuition_is_25g_regionalnews_david_andreatta.htm\">&#8230;open an academy:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The New York Archdiocese is inviting youngsters back to a Greenwich Village parish schoolhouse it shuttered last year &#8211; at $25,000 a pop. <\/p>\n<p>Now, working-class parents who had paid about $2,500 to send their children to the former St. Joseph&#8217;s School on Washington Place are calling its conversion to a private academy targeting well-heeled New Yorkers this fall the height of hypocrisy. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s a slap in the face,&quot; said Bryan Delaney, a bar owner whose eighth-grade son was among 139 students bumped from the parish school when it closed. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s getting away completely from what I thought [the Catholic Church&#8217;s] mission was &#8211; to educate people who don&#8217;t have that kind of money.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>The hefty tuition at the new Academy of St. Joseph, which dips to $17,000 for half-day pre-kindergarten, would put its cost on par with such private heavyweights as Brearley, Dalton, Horace Mann and Spence. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also as much as four times that of most archdiocese-operated high schools and many privately run congregational Catholic schools in the city, such as Cathedral or Rice. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;That&#8217;s more than a salary for most people. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
