Today’s General Audience:<\/a><\/p>\n

In a\u00a0fresh appeal for Christian unity, in particular between Catholics and Orthodox was made by Benedict XVI today, who at the end of his general audience asked the faithful to pray for the successful outcome of the meeting of the International Mixed Commission for theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church currently underway in Ravenna.
\nAt the end of his weekly encounter with over 20 thousand faithful gathered in St Peter\u2019s square \u2013 among them also a group of Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka \u2013 Benedict XVI recalled that the tenth plenary assembly of the mixed commission is taking place this week in Ravenna, Italy. \u00a0<\/span>It is \u201cdiscussing a theme of particular ecumenical importance: \u2018the ecclesiological and canonical consequences of sacramental nature of the Church \u2013 ecclesial communion, conciliation and authority\u2019. \u00a0<\/span>I ask you to join me in prayer \u2013 concluded the pope \u2013 so that this important encounter help the journey towards full communion between Catholics and Orthodox, and that they may soon share in the one and same Chalice of the Lord\u201d.<\/span>

\nToday, before his ecumenical appeal, Benedict XVI continued his reflections on the figures of the \u201cEarly Church Fathers\u201d, speaking of St Hilary of Poitiers<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span>The \u201cgreat\u201d 4th century bishop was remembered above all for his \u201cdefence of our faith in the divinity of Jesus Christ, Son of God and God as the Father\u201d. \u00a0<\/span>He fought against the Arians, who believed Jesus was a created being, to confirm instead Christ\u2019s divinity. \u00a0<\/span>In the words of the pope he \u201cHilary\u2019s insight was the importance of our Trinitarian baptismal faith: I baptise you in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit\u201d.<\/span>
\nBenedict XVI\u2019s final observation was that for Hilary, \u201chumanity finds salvation in Christ alone\u201d. \u00a0<\/span>By becoming human, Christ in fact took upon himself the nature of every man.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is why the journey towards Christ is open to every individual\u201d even if personal conversion is always required.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
