With his statement the Nuncio comes out in support of the embattled Belgian Catholic Bishops. Hans Geybels, the spokesman of Cardinal Godfried Danneels, the Primate of Belgium, said the Nuncio\u2019s support is \u201ca positive signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the past weeks the Belgian Bishops have allowed hundreds of squatters \u2013 so-called \u201c<em>sans-papiers<\/em>\u201d or \u201cpeople without papers [=staying permits]\u201d \u2013 to occupy over 20 Belgian churches and turn them into dormitories and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brusselsjournal.com\/node\/1053\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #003366\">Muslim places of prayer<\/span><\/a>. The immigrants demand that they be allowed to stay in Belgium permanently.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An interesting nugget further down in the story: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santegidio.org\/en\/\">Community of Sant&#8217;Egidio is apparently organizing the church-squatting in Antwerp.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I was in Rome, I spoke to someone who has a quite jaded view of Sant&#8217;Egidio, remarking that their main purpose in life seemed to be hustling for a Nobel Peace Prize.
