{"id":1752,"date":"2007-05-17T07:22:55","date_gmt":"2007-05-17T07:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/viamedia\/2007\/05\/mp-news.html"},"modified":"2007-05-17T07:22:55","modified_gmt":"2007-05-17T07:22:55","slug":"mp-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/viamedia\/2007\/05\/mp-news.html","title":{"rendered":"MP News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ncrcafe.org\/node\/1113\">It&#8217;s coming, says Cardinal Hoyas to CELAM:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The top Vatican official in charge of use of the Tridentine Mass has confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI \u201cintends to extend to the entire church the possibility of celebrating the Mass and the sacraments according to the liturgical books promulgated by Pope John XXIII in 1962.\u201d Those books contain the last approved version of the older &quot;Latin Mass&quot; celebrated prior to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), as well as rites for sacraments such as baptism and holy orders.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks from Cardinal Dar\u00edo Castrill\u00f3n Hoyos, President of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, came in an address to the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean. <\/p>\n<p>The older Tridentine liturgy, according to Castrill\u00f3n, \u201cwas never abolished,\u201d and is today the object of both \u201cnew and renewed interest.\u201d For these reasons, Castrill\u00f3n said, the pope believes the time has come to facilitate wider access to this rite, noting that such a request was made by a commission of cardinals in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>For some months now, speculation has swirled that Pope Benedict XVI is planning to extend wider permission for use of the older Mass, in the form of a document called a <em>motu proprio<\/em>, meaning \u201cunder his own authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Castrill\u00f3n\u2019s speech at the CELAM meeting marks the first time the cardinal has publicly confirmed that such a move is imminent. Castrill\u00f3n said that under the terms of the pope\u2019s decision, the older liturgies will become \u201can extraordinary form of the one Roman rite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Castrill\u00f3n did not provide additional details, such as how sweeping authorization to use the older liturgical books will be, nor whether individual bishops will still be able to place limits on their use, as is the case under current church law.
