Baby Susan herself, by her very weakness and helplessness, forced us to reexamine our standards. In her, as in all the unborn who silently appeal to us for life, we encounter the truth that, \u201cGod chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong\u201d (1 Cor 1:27). They demand that we set aside our mercantile, quid-pro-quo view of the world. We do not measure success by a long life, or wealth, or pleasure, or fame. We measure success by fidelity to love. Susan called us out of ourselves and forced us to reorder our lives according to the standards of love, not the world. She attended Knoxville Catholic High School, then the University of Tennessee where she majored in history. Amy has written columns for Our Sunday Visitor and Catholic News Service at times over the past twenty years. Amy has five children, ranging in age from 26 to 4 and was married to Michael Dubruiel, who died unexpectedly in February 2009.
