As both the Hari and Didcock interviews make clear, Hitchens was able to overcome his past squeamishness about American military force not because America is threatened, but because the threat now comes from men who believe in Allah rather than Marx. Didcock notes, \u201cthe origins of [Hitchens\u2019s] position lie in his long-held distaste for religion,\u201d and Hitchens told Hari, \u201cThe United States was attacked by theocratic fascists who represent all the most reactionary elements on earth. … However bad the American Empire has been, it is not as bad as this.\u201d Hitchens also wrote\u2014in the same column in which he extolled the priest-killing potency of the French and Russian Revolutions\u2014that \u201cGeorge Bush may subjectively be a Christian, but he\u2014and the US armed forces\u2014have objectively done more for secularism than the whole of the American agnostic community combined and doubled.\u201d Hitchens\u2019s entire politics is motivated by his hatred of religion and tradition; he\u2019d be just as happy bombing St. Peter\u2019s as the Taliban.<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
