What did God tell the president during the Red Mass, anyway?<\/a><\/p>\n

While sitting a few rows behind President Bush at church on Sunday, I saw a striking image–one that may help explain how he decides whom to appoint to the federal bench. The service was Catholic, and Mr. Bush is a Methodist, so he wasn’t taking Communion. While others walked forward, the president remained in his pew, kneeling and praying. Early the next morning, Mr. Bush announced the nomination of White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. It was the kind of decision about which he must have prayed fervently.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
