Of course, your computer will be dedicated to our Retreat that weekend, not any other web surfing!). A bare or uncluttered room is suggested, but if that is not possible, remember that true &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >clutter<\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">&#8221; is found in the mind.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">There should also be a single Buddha Statue (although a &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Buddha Statue<\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">&#8221; need not be a &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Statue of a Buddha<\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">&#8220;, and can be a flower, stone, rubber ball, coke bottle or any item in the whole universe &#8230; we will talk about that in a later <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8216;sit-a-long<\/span>&#8216;). Place the &#8216;Buddha Statue&#8217; on a small, raised table, preferably in the center of the room &#8230; not against the wall. We place the &#8216;Buddha Statue&#8217; in the center of the room, not against the wall, as we wish to avoid passing in front, but always pass behind if we need to cross the room. When leaving the Zen Hall, step out with your left foot at the other side of the entrance. After entering the hall each time, bow in <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Gassho <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">toward the Buddha Statue and go to your seat. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DO NOT <\/span>cross in a diagonal &#8216;short cut&#8217; across the room if needing to cross, but walk the &#8216;long way&#8217; following the length of the walls, crossing behind the Buddha Statue (if in the center of the room). At all times when walking, please keep one&#8217;s hands in <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Shashu <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">(see picture at left)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><br \/><a  href=\"http:\/\/www.sotozen-net.or.jp\/kokusai\/zazen_images\/mannerszendo12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 122px; height: 162px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sotozen-net.or.jp\/kokusai\/zazen_images\/mannerszendo12.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/><a  href=\"https:\/\/global.sotozen-net.or.jp\/img\/zendo_etiquette\/mannerszendo04-05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 356px; height: 116px;\" src=\"https:\/\/global.sotozen-net.or.jp\/img\/zendo_etiquette\/mannerszendo04-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you arrive at your seat, face the Zafu cushion and bow in Gassho. Fluff your Zafu while rotating it clockwise, then Gassho again to the Zafu. Next, turn around to the right (clockwise) until your seat is behind you, and Gassho to the open room. Sit down on your Zafu, spin around to the right (clockwise), and sit facing the wall. (If you cannot easily spin around, it is alright just to sit down facing the wall).<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/global.sotozen-net.or.jp\/img\/zendo_etiquette\/mannerszendo06-09.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 332px; height: 373px;\" src=\"https:\/\/global.sotozen-net.or.jp\/img\/zendo_etiquette\/mannerszendo06-09.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>At the end of Zazen, the procedure is reversed &#8230; Spin to the right (clockwise) until again facing the room, and carefully (especially after a long sitting) stand up. Turn again to the right (clockwise) to face the <span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Zafu<\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">, fluff it again while rotating, and replace it (or for <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Kinhin, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">place it out of the way). <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gassho<\/span> toward the <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Zafu. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">turn again right (clockwise) to face the room, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Gassho <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">toward the room. If beginning <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:85%;\" >Kinhin<\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"> turn to the left. If leaving the Zen Hall, retrace your steps to enter. Bow in <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Gassho<\/span> toward the Buddha Statue before exiting.<\/p>\n<p>To the degree possible, we will maintain silence during our two day Retreat.
