The monk gave a Katsu<\/span> <\/span>shout.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Master hit him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, a monk asked: “What is the essence of Buddhism?<\/span>“

The monk gave a Katsu<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The master also gave a Katsu<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The monk hesitated.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The Master hit him.<\/span><\/p>\n

The master asked a monk: “Where do you come from?<\/span>“<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The monk gave a Katsu<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Master folded his arms and told him to sit down.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The monk hesitated \u00e2\u20ac\u201c then the Master hit him.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Master <\/o:p>Y\u00c5\u008ds\u00c5\u008d S\u00c5\u008di composed a final poem …

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>On the death bed\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<\/span>Katsu<\/span>!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Let he who has eyes see!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Katsu! Katsu! Katsu!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And once again, <\/span><\/span>Katsu!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Today, Jundo will demonstrate the power of the Katsu<\/span> Shout!<\/span>
<\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

We see in the past that<\/span> those who transcended the ordinary and transcended the sacred<\/span> and those who died while sitting or died while standing,<\/span> relied totally on this power.<\/span> Moreover, changing of the moment through the action of <\/span>a finger,<\/span> <\/span>a [flag]pole, <\/span>a needle, or a wooden clapper<\/span>;<\/span> <\/i>and exact experience of the state through the manifestation of<\/span> a whisk<\/span>, a fist,<\/span> a staff,<\/span> or a shout,<\/span><\/span> can never be understood by thinking and discrimination. <\/span>How could they be known through mystical powers or practice and experience? They may be dignified behavior beyond sound and form. How could they be anything other than criteria that precede knowing and seeing? <\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span>[Nishijima]<\/span>
<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

In surveying the past, <\/span>we find that transcendence of both mundane and sacred<\/span> and dying while either sitting or standing <\/span>have all depended entirely on the power of z<\/span>azen.<\/span> In addition, triggering awakening with <\/span>a finger,<\/span> <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>banner,<\/span> a needle, or a mallet<\/span>,<\/span> and effecting realization with<\/span> a whisk<\/span>, a fist,<\/span> <\/span>a staff,<\/span> <\/span>or a shout-these <\/span><\/span>cannot be understood by discriminative thinking<\/span>; much less can they be known through the practice of supernatural power. They must represent conduct beyond seeing and hearing. Are they not a standard prior to knowledge and views?<\/span> <\/span><\/span>[SZTP]
