Sometimes it is the same in outer form with the customs of other places and times, sometimes it is different. Many of our new, &#8216;Western&#8217; ways may be &#8211;better&#8211; than those of ancient days, a refinement upon the original teachings of the Buddha himself.<\/p>\n<p>But that is just a matter of outer form, or the expression of teachings in words &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span>The moment we sit Zazen,<br \/>realizing this very instant in Zazen as still and complete,<br \/>there is not the slightest gap,<br \/>there is no difference &#8230;<br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Your sitting Zazen, is the Buddhas and Ancestors sitting Zazen.<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> <\/span>  <\/p>\n<p face=\"times new roman\">\n<p style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<p style=\"font-family: arial;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Broadly then,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">in this world and in other worlds, in <\/span><st1:country-region style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" st=\"on\">India<\/st1:country-region><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\"> and in <\/span><st1:country-region style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">China<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">,<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">all similarly maintain the Buddha-posture, and solely indulge in the fundamental custom: we simply devote ourselves to sitting, and are caught by the still state. Although there are myriad distinctions and thousands of differences, we should just pursue the truth through Zen balance. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Why should we abandon our own sitting platform, to come and go without purpose through the dusty borders of foreign lands?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">If we misplace one step we pass over the moment of the present.<\/span> [Nishijima]<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p  style=\"font-family:arial;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:arial;\" >In general, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in our world and others, in both <\/span><\/span><st1:country-region style=\"font-family: arial; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" st=\"on\">India<\/st1:country-region><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;\" > and <\/span><st1:country-region style=\"font-family: arial; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">China<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:arial;\" ><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">,<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-family:arial;\" >all equally hold the buddha-seal[*]. While each lineage expresses its own style, they are all simply devoted to sitting, totally blocked in resolute stability. Although they say that there are ten thousand distinctions and a thousand variations, they just wholeheartedly engage the way in zazen. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:arial;\" >Why leave behind the seat in your own home to wander in vain through the dusty realms of other lands? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-family:arial;\" >If you make one misstep, you stumble past what is directly in front of you.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> <\/span>[SZTP]<\/p>\n<p  style=\"font-family:arial;\"><span style=\";font-family:times new roman;font-size:78%;\"  >[*]<\/span><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Here, &#8220;Buddha Seal&#8221; means the          Buddha-mind seal, or Buddha\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mind of enlightenment. The Chinese          character for &#8220;seal&#8221; is <i>mudra<\/i> in Sanskrit, a bodily or hand position which          is used in meditation and other ritualistic activities.
