{"id":227,"date":"2008-09-03T08:11:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-03T08:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/treeleafzen\/2008\/09\/sit-a-long-with-jundo-heart-su-26.html"},"modified":"2008-09-03T08:11:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-03T08:11:00","slug":"sit-a-long-with-jundo-heart-su-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/treeleafzen\/2008\/09\/sit-a-long-with-jundo-heart-su-26.html","title":{"rendered":"SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Heart Sutra XX (Four Noble Truths I)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:100%\">The next words of the Heart Sutra are shorthand for <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Four Noble Truths<\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">No\/ suf\/fer\/ing\/, nor\/ cause\/ or\/ end\/ to\/ suf\/fer\/ing\/<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">&#8230; So, let&#8217;s take a few days to talk about those Truths <\/span><span style=\"font-size:100%\">&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>&#8230;at the very heart of the Buddha&#8217;s Teachings<span style=\"font-style: italic\">.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right\"><span>So elegant and direct, thus the very simplicity of the teaching can be lost &#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">Life is <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Dukkha, <\/span><br \/>there is a cause for <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Dukkha,<br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>there is a way to the cessation of <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Dukkha<\/span>,<br \/>that way is the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Noble Eightfold Path<span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><\/span><\/span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br \/><\/span><span>So, what is<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\"> &#8216;<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Dukkha<\/span>&#8216;?<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right\">No one English word captures the full depth and range of the Pali term <i>Dukkha.<\/i> It is sometimes rendered as <span style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8216;suffering<\/span>&#8216;, as in <span style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8216;life is suffering&#8217;. <\/span>But perhaps it&#8217;s better expressed as <span style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8216;dissatisfaction&#8217;, &#8216;anxiety&#8217;, &#8216;disappointment&#8217; &#8216;unease at imperfection&#8217; <\/span>or <span style=\"font-style: italic\">&#8216;frustration&#8217;<\/span>, terms that wonderfully convey a subtlety of meaning.<\/div>\n<p>Your &#8216;self&#8217; wishes this world to be <span style=\"font-style: italic\">X, <\/span>yet this world is not <span style=\"font-style: italic\">X. <\/span>The mental state that may result to the &#8216;self&#8217; from this disparity is <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Dukkha.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right\">Shakyamuni Buddha gave many examples &#8230; sickness (when we do not wish to be sick), old age (when we long for youth), death (if we cling to life), loss of a loved one (as we cannot let go), violated expectations, the failure of happy moments to last (though we wish them to last). Even joyous moments &#8230; such as happiness and good news, treasure or pleasant times &#8230; can be a source of suffering if we cling to them, are attached to those things.<\/div>\n<p>In ancient stories, <i>Dukkha<\/i> is often compared to a chariot&#8217;s or potter&#8217;s wheel that will not turn smoothly as it revolves.
